Can you keep a secret?

This is not what I'm searching for. Written on 04-10-2010 by MaKa

Until the eighties people weren't that communicative about pregnancies, babies and everything else concerning these subjects. You didn't have to tell others you wanted to have children. You just got married and had them. Tell other people the gender of your child before it was even born? You couldn't because you just didn't know what it would be. And only after the first twelve critical weeks you had a little certainty about your pregnancy, till then you kept your lips sealed.

But that was in the old days. In the last twenty years a lot has changed. You know when you're pregnant the day you stop having you're period. A simple test in the bathroom gives you the answer. And a couple of weeks later, when you are seeing that little heart beat during a ultrasound, it is almost certain: You are becomming a mum.  Halfway during the pregnancy you get a check-up to see if your baby is healthy, and you can get a peek at the gender of your unborn child. This information could come in handy for decorating the baby bedroom. And for picking a name of course.

To tell, or ...

You can get to know all kinds of information about your baby, even before it is born. But, do you want to know all this? And if you do, are you going to tell others about it? As so many other developments, these possibilities have brought with them new decisions. So one person will tell she is pregnant the moment she has done the pregnancy test, and another  will wait until the first twelve weeks are over. Whereas you keep silent that your third child is again a boy, your neighbor shouts along the street that she wants pink baby socks at her baby shower. Some couples even tell the name of their unborn child, whereas others don't even think about telling it.

What will you do?

With something as personal as a pregnancy you can't make good or bad decisions. It's for everyone to decide if they want to tell it or not, and as an outsider you have to accept these decisions. Therefore it is remarkable that people often have a opinion about the preferences of others.

And what will you do? Will you spill the word as soon as you hear the news yourself or will you wait en keep it silent until nature takes it's course and will show you what you have inside your belly.
